How The Course Is Structured

Creativity With Electronic Sound consists of 3 interactive workshops that combine listening, discussion, and creation, using legendary machines from Moog, Arp, EMS and Roland and in an intimate setting that encourages collaboration with other course participants. Our focus throughout will be on how practical experimentation and engagement can help you better understand electronic music and develop your own creativity in it.

Workshop 1: Style, form and beginnings.

What makes electronic music electronic? Is it the instruments, the style, the form — or some combination of these? In our first workshop we'll discuss the beginnings of electronic music and its genres, and get hands on with world class equipment as we learn about sound sources and modulation with filters, envelopes and more.

Workshop 2: Sound design and synthesis.

Should electronic sounds be comfortingly familiar or rich and strange? In this workshop we'll cover how to design melodic and percussive sounds from scratch and how to create complex patches using techniques like frequency modulation.

Workshop 3: Sequencing, performing and recording.

Once you understand how to create sounds, how should you create music with them? In this workshop we'll cover various sequencing styles, discuss how they're used in classic tracks, and give you an opportunity to create your own short works.
